From the old English: Gǣð ā wyrd swā hīo scel! (Beowulf, line 455).
Beowulf speaks it to Hrothgar before facing Grendel—calm, without illusion. No plea, no bargain. Just the recognition that fate (wyrd) moves exactly as it is bound to move: inexorable, feminine in grammar and feeling, like the Norns, a woven force older than gods. Not blind chance, not cruel whim, but the way the pattern must unfold from what has already been woven.
